Inn on the Creek lies in the midst of a cyprus grove overlooking Salado Creek—but it hasn't always stood here. The main building, a gray Victorian home, was built in 1882 in Cameron, Texas and then moved to its current location by the original innkeepers. Another building came from the nearby town of Holland. Regardless of origin, each structure has been fully restored and decorated with antiques.
Neat architectural feature: Some buildings were constructed using wooden pegs instead of nails and screws.
Guest room close-up: The Tyler room has a queen-sized iron bed, a sitting area overlooking the front of the grounds, and boasts easy access to the gym and hot tub facilities.
Best places to nap: In a rocking chair on the porch or in a creek-side hammock
Included meals: Daily hot breakfast; some options come with a picnic and breakfast in bed
Live jazz music: Performed by the creek every Saturday night from 9–11 p.m.
Salado, Texas: Artsy Town with Local Winemakers
Salado calls itself "the best art town in Texas," and for good reason. Main Street is lined with more than 60 shops where you can buy local artwork, pottery, glass, and antiques. You'll find bronze statues scattered throughout town, including Billy Goat Gruff next to Dodd's Creek Bridge. Every October, Salado hosts an annual art fair, where vendors hawk handmade jewelry, paintings, and other creations.
Artwork isn't the only locally made product here—Salado Creek Winery, located right along Main Street, makes wines onsite from Texas-grown grapes, lemons, and limes. It holds tastings every day.
