Rustic Cabins within Old Schoolhouse Surrounded by Nature
John James Audubon’s meticulous documentation of birds helped carve out his standing as one of America’s foremost naturalists and a staple of science textbooks. It’s fitting that one of the eight rooms at Adventures Unlimited’s Schoolhouse Inn bears his name, and not just because the inn is an authentic converted school building: the woodland resort, tucked away from civilization, is peppered with birds’ nests in its towering oaks and pines. Underscoring the idyllic location, Coldwater Creek flows through to Blackwater River, which moves through miles of state-protected forest and along the western border of the tranquil Adventures Unlimited resort.
The old schoolhouse stands in the center of the resort. In addition to the Audubon quarters, the other rooms bear the names of famous American authors and naturalists as a tribute to the building’s studious past and its pupils’ fondness of sleeping on top of books. The William Faulkner room, with one queen-size bed and a private screened porch, ensures a secluded, peaceful wilderness retreat, and the Dr. Seuss room features a queen-size bed and bunk beds.
Though all eight rooms share a similar design, from their hardwood floors to their high ceilings and antique furnishings, four of the rooms feature seasonal gas fireplaces and lead out to a communal porch, where wooden rocking chairs and porch swings sway in the open forest breeze.
Adventures Unlimited: Acres of Outdoor Adventure
Adventures Unlimited lies just past the official boundary of the Blackwater River State Forest and takes advantage of its position by dedicating itself to outdoor excursions. In the five-hour Ultimate Zip Adventure conducted by Zip Adventures, groups of up to eight soar 40 feet above Coldwater Creek's sugar-white sandbars and surrounding forest. Along the way, 14 observation platforms provide access to up to 900-foot ziplines that overlook the rugged terrain. The trip culminates in a climb up a massive spiral staircase to the final launching pad, from which one can see Coldwater Creek meander through the entire forest, forming oxbow lakes and flawless cursive zs. As they glide through the canopies, zipliners might catch a glimpse of the many canoes and kayaks that journey through Coldwater Creek. After arming themselves with a paddle and mounting their floating steed, kayakers impart on 4-, 7-, or 11-mile treks down the river.
Between outdoor adventures, many guests at Adventures Unlimited might venture to nearby Milton to eat or gather supplies. Fishing is allowed in Coldwater Creek—home to large-mouth bass, catfish, and pickerel—for those with valid Florida fishing licenses. At night, Adventures Unlimited converts its game field into a planetarium, and stars and constellations shine undisturbed in the rural sky.

Traveler's Tips
- Plan on cooking your own meals. Every cabin has a refrigerator, and there are plenty of barbecue pits near the inn.
- Many campers make the 13-mile trip to the nearest town, Milton, about once a day to gather groceries and supplies.
- If you intend to use any TVs, telephones, clocks, or radios, make sure to bring your own. None of the cabins have them.
- Cell-phone coverage is spotty in the woods, but AT&T usually receives the best signal.
