The vibe is laid-back and there are only 1,000 residents in this beachside locale, giving it a small-town charm. The attitude, along with its array of bars, shops, and restaurants, have helped make the village an up-and-coming destination.

Most of Hopkins’s residents identify as Garinagu, an ethnic group descended from native Caribbean and African people. You can get a sense of the soul of the city by going to the Lebeha Drumming School, which teaches the local Garifuna traditions of music and dance. Almost every night after 7 p.m., the school holds open drumming sessions that anyone can attend. The Gulisi Garifuna Museum in Dangriga is worth a visit if you’re interested in learning about the history and customs of the Garinagu.

Hopkins is just 21 miles south of Dangriga, the capital of the district and the largest town in southern Belize.
