Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort

The Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort sits at the base of Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano, where it’s surrounded by tropical rainforest and hot springs. It was named the best luxury mineral spring spa in the World Luxury Hotel Awards in 2012, and National Geographic called it one of the world’s top 10 wellness destinations.

A natural thermal river flows through the grounds, forming lagoons and waterfalls that range from 77 to 102 degrees. You can soak in a tiered hot spring dubbed “the ladder of relaxation,” or visit one of the river-fed swimming pools. The Grand Spa, which can be accessed via stone walkways and footbridges, incorporates local ingredients into relaxing treatments. All spa bungalows have open-air jacuzzis where you can soak.

The resort features four onsite dining venues. At Ave del Paraiso, servers make fresh guacamole tableside. At the end of the day, guests retire to rooms outfitted with private patios or terraces as well as furnishings made by local artists.

Los Suenos Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort

Travel + Leisure has included this resort on its list of the world’s best hotels since 2010. Situated between the rainforest and the ocean, it offers breathtaking views of the Costa Rican landscape. At the center of the property you’ll find a sprawling network of swimming pools adorned with canals, bridges, and landscaped islands.

Guests can choose from an array of onsite activities, including a round at La Iguana Golf Course. The 18-hole track unfolds alongside the rainforest, and you’ll likely catch glimpses of monkeys and macaws as you play. The newly opened Sibo Rainforest Spa & Retreat offers a range of organic treatments. You can also sign up for offsite adventures such as canopy tours and horseback riding.
