Tobacco Caye, Belize: Islet with Pristine Beaches on the Barrier Reef
Lauded by Men’s Journal for having one of the “Best Beaches in the World,” Tobacco Caye packs a lot of tropical activity into a small area. The island is one of the tiniest off the Belize coast, stretching just 200 feet wide and 400 feet long. While only around 20 people make Tobacco Caye their permanent home, visitors come from all over to snorkel in its clear waters and explore mainland jungles. The island is near the Belize Barrier Reef, which Jacques Cousteau once referred to as “one of the four must-dive locations on this blue planet.” If you’ve come to dive, one highlight is an underwater cave named Hell Hole, which features fully formed stalactites and stalagmites.
While you’re in this part of Belize, keep an eye out for several wildlife wonders. The region is home to one of the world’s largest populations of West Indian manatees, as well as several turtle species. From Dangriga Town, the dock for a water taxi to Tobacco Caye is a 10-minute taxi cab ride.
