Hotel at a Glance: K-Diamond-K Guest Ranch
At this ranch tucked in the northern Washington wilderness, cowpokes drive cattle over mountain ranges, while cowboys ride down backcountry trails. Nope, it’s not a scene from an Old West flick—it’s just an average afternoon at K-Diamond-K Guest Ranch. You can get in on the action by riding in an old-fashioned covered wagon, or heading down hiking trails that lead by fishing spots along the San Poil River. The 1600-acre ranch has been owned by the same family for generations, and they make you feel welcome with home-cooked meals and crackling campfires at night.
- Multiple packages available: Choose from options that include daily breakfast, all meals, or onsite activities that may include horseback riding, game hunting, or fishing for rainbow trout. Those not selecting an option with ranch activities may still choose to purchase these activities upon booking their stay.
- Where you’ll stay: The homey guest quarters feature log-frame beds and quilted bedding to keep you warm on chilly nights. If you choose to keep in touch with the outside world, there’s free WiFi available.
- Saddle up: Enjoy guided rides along miles of mountain trails.
- Local wildlife: You can typically spot wild turkeys and deer roaming the property.
Republic, Washington: Quiet Mountain Town Near Copper Butte Hike
When gold prospectors first settled down on a pine-fringed patch of land high above the San Poil River valley, they named the town Eureka Gulch. This name began as a nod to the town’s prospect for gold-mining—”Eureka, I’ve found it!”—but the same exclamation now suits it as an outdoorsy destination. Fly-fishing is a popular pursuit on the river, and some anglers head to Curlew Lake to cast out for muskie and bass. If you want to hike, venture further east into the foothills of the Kettle Mountain Range. It has trails that lead to fields of colorful wildflowers and distinctive rock formations, such as Copper Butte. Copper Butte is about an hour or so outside of Republic’s modest town center, but it’s worth the scenic drive to stand amid the Ponderosa pines that top its 7,140-foot summit.
