Private Balconies Overlook Grenada’s Morne Rouge Bay

One of the West Indies’ southernmost islands, Grenada owes its name to a fit of homesickness. According to legend, the island's lush hills reminded Spanish sailors of Granada in Andalusia, Spain, so they named the island after the Spanish town. Near the southwestern tip of the island, Kalinago Beach Resort has its own origin story—"Kalinago" is the original name of the indigenous Carib people, and the hotel owner's great-grandmother was one of the few remaining Caribs. The hotel stays connected to the region's past with a restaurant serving traditional Caribbean dishes and a weekly Carib Talk lead by a local historian.

The resort sits along Morne Rouge Bay, its archways and railings as white as the sandy beach below. At the small, boutique property, each of the 29 guest rooms looks over the Caribbean Sea from a private patio. Inside, teak furniture and rainforest prints continue the tropical vibe.

Though the restaurant next door serves cocktails blended from local rums, many prefer sipping at the open-air beach bar. There's also a swim-up bar next to the pool in case you don’t feel like getting out of the water. Each deal option includes a daily breakfast of healthy, tropical fare; three of the options also come with nightly dinner comprising creole and international cuisine. A local gardener named Asmo leads tours of the gardens, plucking tropical fruits for guests to sample.

Grenada: Historic Spice Isle with Waterfalls and Rainforests

Located about 100 miles north of South America, Grenada has become one of the world's biggest exporters of nutmeg, and it shows. Groves of nutmeg trees blanket the island, and factories such as the Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Station perfume the air with racks of drying seeds. In local markets, the spice shows up in jams, syrups, and even ice creams, alongside mace, cloves, cinnamon, cocoa, and whole vanilla pods.

The Grand Etang National Park at the island’s center showcases the landscape's less cultivated side. Tangles of teak and mahogany trees shelter mona monkeys, iguanas, and mongooses. Trails snake toward waterfalls such as Seven Sisters and Concord Falls, but be careful—paths can be muddy or slippery, so you might want to hire a local guide.
