Madrid

A hop-on/hop-off bus tour of the city takes you to some of Madrid’s most famous attractions, with a stop at Reina Sofía Museum to see works by Dali and Picasso’s famous Guernica.

  • Must-see attraction: The Prado, one of Europe’s finest art museums, houses masterpieces by Velazquez, Goya, Rubens, and Rembrandt.
  • Buen Retiro Park: These 350 idyllic acres were set aside for royalty in the 17th century, but are now open to the public. Take a rowboat across the lake or mosey among marble statues and cypress groves.
  • Puerta del Sol: Considered the center of Spain, this huge city square is where all roads in the old town eventually lead to—and where late-night revelers congregate ‘til dawn.
  • Optional tours: Attend a flamenco dinner show or take a day trip to Toledo (extra fees)
  • Hotel: Husa Princesa or similar

Barcelona

Spend 3 nights taking in this seaside city’s vibrant Catalan culture and whimsical architecture. A walking tour spotlights the historic Gothic District, with its dizzying combination of historic buildings, curio shops, and street performers.

  • Must-see attraction: La Sagrada Familia—an otherworldy cathedral and the pinnacle of Antoni Gaudi’s Art Nouveau architecture movement. The exterior of the church seems to be dripping with melting wax, while the interior stuns visitors with tree-like columns and a ceiling that resembles a beehive.
  • Picasso Museum traces the Spanish artist’s budding career with a collection of early sketches, ceramic sculptures, and Blue Period paintings.
  • La Boqueria Market: CNN Travel picked this marketplace along the Las Ramblas pedestrian street as one of the world’s best fresh markets. Grab some exotic fruits, homemade flan, and traditional Catalan cuisine.
  • Optional tour: Head to Figueres to visit the comical and strange Dali Museum, designed by the surrealist himself (extra fee), or head out to Montserrat to explore the Royal Basilica
  • Hotel: Hotel Barcelona Center or similar

Seville Extension Tour

You can include Seville in your trip by extending it one extra day. You’ll spend three nights in Barcelona, two nights in Madrid, and two nights in Seville, an Andalusian city in the country’s southwest corner. This historic city is full of gorgeous sights. Wander among orange trees, jasmine flowers, and fountains in the gardens at Alcazar, or duck into a cafe to watch a passionate flamenco routine.

  • Must-see attraction: The Seville Cathedral, an exquisite example of Gothic architecture, dates back to 1402; be sure to climb the Giralda Bell Tower—once a minaret—for a panoramic view of the city.
  • Historic neighborhood: Stroll the picturesque historic quarter known as Santa Cruz; when you’re tired of walking, stop in a cafe for tapas.
  • Enjoy an afternoon sitting in the Plaza de Espana, an open-air square built in 1929 and recently restored to its original splendor.
  • Hotel: Hotel Sevilla Center or similar
