Three-City Tour of Italy’s Museums and Churches

In pre-Roman times, the Etruscans settled the Italian peninsula. They produced ornately engraved terra-cotta and bronze sculptures. Since then, Italian artists of both the ancient and modern world have been on the forefront of artistic development, leaving elaborate frescoes, mosaics, and hand-carved statues in their wake. On this nine-day, seven-night tour of Italy, you’ll get a chance to explore world-famous art museums and cathedrals in three legendary cities: Rome, Florence, and Venice. The tour includes roundtrip airfare, 4-star hotel accommodations, and Eurostar train travel, plus a daily breakfast buffet and tours of Rome and Florence.

Days 1–4: Rome

On your second day in Rome, the group takes a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour of the city that stops at 10 different locations, including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The rest of the time is yours to explore the city at your leisure. You can also sign up for an optional trip (for an extra fee) to the island of Capri or the volcanic ruins of Pompeii.

While in Rome, you’ll stay at the Mecenate Palace Hotel or similar accommodations. The hotel is located in the historic city center near the Colosseum and Imperial Forums, overlooking the façade of the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore. It’s also close to the Roma Termini train station.

Days 5–6: Florence

After arriving by train in Florence, you can spend the rest of the day getting to know the city’s charming piazzas and world-class museums on your own. The next day, you’ll embark on a walking tour that passes by the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval stone bridge with a bustling outdoor market, and Piazza del Duomo. The latter contains the famous Duomo cathedral as well as Giotto’s bell tower.

You’ll spend two nights at the Hotel Ambasciatori or similar accommodations in Florence. From here, you can walk to a number of museums, churches, and the Florence Santa Maria Novella train station.

Days 7–9: Venice

A two-hour train ride brings you into Venice, a city of small islands accessible by bridge, boat, or saddled dolphin. The next two days are yours to explore the city on your own. You can take an optional tour (extra fees) to Murano, an island known for producing colorful glass jewelry, figurines, and chandeliers.

In Venice, you’ll stay at the Hotel Principe or similar accommodations. The hotel is situated right along the Grand Canal, where you can catch a waterbus to any of the city’s piazzas, museums, or outlying islands.
