On this seven-day vacation, you’ll get to drive along the coast of Sicily, stopping in ancient cities and medieval villages along the way. Explore on your own with this self-driven program or choose to visit some of our favorite highlights listed below.
You’ll have two days to explore Sicily’s capital city Palermo, which dates back to 8,000 B.C. It’s been ruled by the Spanish, the Romans, the Arabs, and the Normans, and this mixed heritage can be seen in its eclectic architecture and food stalls.
The Norman Palace, situated on a plateau above the city, showcases a mix of 10th-century Norman and 17th-century Spanish styles. In the adjacent Palatine Chapel, there’s a stalactite ceiling and Byzantine mosaics.
Accommodations: at Mondello Palace, which features an outdoor swimming pool and an acclaimed restaurant.
Province of Trapani – Segesta, Erice, and Agrigento
On Day 3, you’ll head southwest to the province of Trapani, a coastal stretch dotted with quaint fishing towns. A key highlight of this trip is the temple of Segesta. This Doric Temple was built around 430–420 BCE, but was never finished—the columns are unfluted, lifting equipment is strewn on the grounds, and there are no structural preparations for a roof.
Later, you can choose to explore the hilltop town of Erice, whose cobblestone streets and stone houses harken back to medieval times.
Agrigento
Agrigento is famous as the site of the Valley of the Temples, a collection of fifth-century Greek temples whose yellow sandstone walls remain remarkably intact. The Villa Romana del Casale de Piazza Armerina, a formal rural settlement about two hours away, contains 120,000 square feet of mosaics. UNESCO calls them the “finest anywhere in the Roman world.” Later, you can choose to journey to Catania for a two-night stay.
Accommodations: at The Akrabello Hotel located minutes from the city’s stunning shoreline.
Catania
Sicily’s second-largest city is dominated by Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano. The streets here are constructed from dried-up lava that buried the city in 1669, and grey volcanic stone makes up many of its ubiquitous baroque buildings. On Day 5, you can explore Etna’s craters and volcanic vents while trekking its mountain trails.
Taormina is a chic resort town that has drawn jet-setting Europeans since the 19th century. Here you can visit an ancient Greek theater, tour public gardens, or while the day away on Lido Mazzaro Beach.
Accommodations: at Sheraton Catania, which features panoramic views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea.
