Days 1–3: Overnight Flight and Athens
After an overnight flight, you’ll land in Athens, the capital of Greece and home to some of the world’s most famous ancient sites. The Acropolis has been an icon of the Western world for thousands of years. Perched high above the city, the monument is made up of a collection of sacred temples and Doric limestone buildings adorned with altars and elaborate friezes. The most famous temple of them all is, of course, the Parthenon, which was built for the goddess Athena in the fifth century BC. You can see these and other landmarks during your stint in Athens.
- Mount Lycabettus provides the perfect perch to watch the sun set over the city. You can reach the summit by hiking or riding in a cable car.
- Diomidis Botanical Garden spans more than 1,800 acres with cobblestone paths that bloom with 2,500 types of plants and trees, including bamboo and cherry trees.
- Optional tours: For an extra fee, you can take a guided sightseeing tour of Athens or a day trip to Delphi, a key site in ancient Greek mythology.
Days 4–6: Paros
Paros is a little more subdued than the other Greek islands. Its claim to fame: the Venus de Milo was carved from marble sourced on the island. You can sip ouzo and nibble fresh calamari amid views of the Aegean Sea here.
- The Archaeological Museum displays a fifth-century likeness of Nike and a sculpture of Gorgon that dates back to the sixth century. You can also browse an extensive collection of ancient pottery.
- Panagia Ekatondapyliani: Built in AD 326, this complex includes three churches. Its most notable is girded by imposing columns hewn from Parian marble. There’s also a museum that boasts a selection of ancient icons.
Days 7–11: Santorini and Return to United States
The landscape here—black-sand beaches that give way to rugged red bluffs—possesses a fantastical quality that inspired Travel + Leisure to name Santorini one of the top islands on the planet. The volcanic island is steeped in legend; some say it may be the real site of the Lost City of Atlantis. Hike the rim of Santorini’s volcanic caldera for prime views of the island and the sea. You’ll return to Athens by ferry on Day 10 and fly back to the United States on Day 11.
- Scuba-dive off Caldera Beach to see underwater lava-rock formations and caves that shelter barracuda, lobsters, and colorful fish.
- Oia village hugs the rim of the island’s collapsed volcanic caldera. Its beautiful views of the sea are almost outdone by the cluster of bright-white cliffside buildings topped with blue domes.
On some departures, the island of Santorini will be visited first, followed by Paros. Ferry transportation schedules may vary.
