Mountainside Mexican Culinary Retreat with Star Chef

As one of the founders of La Villa Bonita, chef Ana Garcia draws culinary inspiration from her great-grandmother, a marketplace butcher renowned locally for her spicy chorizo sausage. Ana has become a famous chef in her own right, appearing on the Food Network and a variety of morning news programs. Located an hour south of Mexico City in the Tepozteco highlands, her culinary retreat combines authentic Mexican cuisine with warm hospitality. She shares her in-depth knowledge of traditional dishes in an open-air teaching kitchen that Cooking Light magazine calls "an ideal spot for culinary enthusiasts."

Both optional specialty packages center on a three-hour cooking class with Chef Ana herself. Beforehand, guests start the day with a generous breakfast, including housemade jams and biscuits from scratch. Then it's off to the local market to select cheeses, cuts of meat, and heritage varieties of corn. Though menus vary, dishes can include cochinita pibil (pork slow-roasted in citrus) and chilis en nogada (stuffed poblano chilis topped with walnut-cream sauce and pomegranate seeds). Enjoy the fruits of your labor with wine or beer during a hearty mid-afternoon lunch.

The hotel’s guest rooms surround a central courtyard, and many rooms overlook the property's organic citrus orchard, veggie gardens, or lily pond. Take a well-earned break from the kitchen by lounging beside the heated pool, which is framed by volcanic rock. The five-night option includes an optional hike up El Tepozteco, home to an ancient Aztec temple dedicated to Tepoztecatl, god of the alcoholic beverage called pulque.

Two-Night Culinary Indulgence Weekend Package

The Culinary Indulgence Weekend package caters to travelers looking for a food-centered, weekend escape. After pickup from Mexico City International Airport (MEX) on Friday, you'll sit down to a multicourse dinner crafted from the freshest local ingredients and complemented by housemade cocktails. Following Saturday's cooking class, there will be tastings of tequila, mescal (a smokier beverage made from agave), and pulque (a fermented sap considered sacred by the Aztecs).

Five-Night Culinary Getaway Package

Five-night trips allow for more flexibility: you can add dinners, day trips, and cooking days (for extra fees), or explore the Tepozteco highlands on your own. In addition to the cooking class and Tepozteco hike, this package includes a bottle of wine and a large spread of Mexican appetizers.
