Built in the early 1800s as a summertime retreat for the Pillsbury family, The Lake House at Ferry Point retains much of its original charm. An expansive porch is decked out with rocking chairs and wicker benches, and an elegant gazebo sits on the point overlooking Lake Winnisquam. The snow-capped White Mountains in the distance add to the picturesque natural scenery, including the majestic Franconia Notch.
The 10 individually styled guest rooms are each named for a local lake. In the Wentworth room, tucked behind the living room on the first floor, you’ll find original hardwood floors, views of fruit trees, and a two-person jacuzzi. The Sunrise Lake room channels the French countryside with a checked settee and an ornate brass bed. In the morning, breakfast specialties such as peach melba french toast and sautéed strawberries are served in the turn-of-the-century dining room, which looks out on the lake.
New Hampshire Lakes Region: Ski Mountains and Forests
Though primarily a summertime destination, New Hampshire’s midstate Lakes Region provides year-round entertainment. As the sounds of buzzing jet skis and riverboats fade away, a quiet calm settles on the nearly 40 small towns dotting the area, and outdoorsy types head to the nearby mountains to get their thrills. The all-levels ski slopes of Gunstock Mountain Resort sit high above Lake Winnipesaukee and about 12 miles east of The Lake House at Ferry Point. In addition to its 51 downhill trails, many of which are open for night skiing, the ski area also has a snow-tube park and miles of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Visitors can also ski the rugged peaks of the White Mountains, about an hour’s drive north of the Lakes Region. Highlights here include Cannon Mountain, which is praised by Moon Travel Guides for having everything a skier could want.
Stay for two in the Wentworth Lake room, Lake Winnisquam room, Opechee Lake room, Squam Lake room, Loon Lake room, Sunrise Lake room, or Sunset Lake room. Includes a bottle of Hermit Woods Winery wine, $20 dining credit to Onions Pub and Restaurant, and Just Maple maple syrup.
