Resort near Ski Resorts, Casinos, and Lake Tahoe

The roofs of Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort, long and lined with sharp peaks, seem to pay homage to the Sierra Nevada mountains that encircle Lake Tahoe. Located on the lake's southern edge, just outside the town of South Lake Tahoe, the resort grants easy access to the region's countless natural wonders. And after a day spent hiking or skiing, it's an easy trip to the bars, dance clubs, and blackjack tables in the casino district just a mile away, across the Nevada state line.

Guest rooms at the resort are decorated in understated earth tones. After whipping up a meal in the attached kitchen or kitchenette, guests can sit down at a dining-room table tucked neatly against the wall. The front desk rents out DVDs for you to watch on the room's flat-screen TV.

For more indoor recreation, there are pool and ping-pong tables in the resort's game room. The heated swimming pool is partially enclosed under a canopy, but even with snow on the ground, an outdoor half remains open to catch ski jumpers who overshoot their landing sites.

South Lake Tahoe, California: Year-Round Haven for Outdoor Adventures in Sierra Nevadas

Lake Tahoe has no offseason—people make use of its pristine water, beaches, and mountains all year long. There's also something to do at practically any hour. Nightclubs and bars are popular in South Lake Tahoe and stay open until the wee hours of the morning.

Tahoe is North America’s largest alpine lake, and with its size you can get a good view from practically anywhere, especially from the innumerable trails winding around the water. Another spectacular scenic vista draws visitors to Emerald Bay State Park, which is accessible year-round. High above this bay, you can see waterfalls cascading down granite bluffs.

The area's world-class skiing is a big draw until early May. Closest to Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort is Heavenly Mountain Resort, where 29 chairlifts lead to 97 different trails. Take the Heavenly Mountain gondola to the resort’s Adventure Peak, where you can admire views of the lake from 9,136 feet above sea level.

Situated a few miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe is the neighboring town of Stateline, Nevada, a casino town trimmed in neon. After a day spent trekking or skiing, travelers often flock here to play blackjack and roulette at several lavish resort casinos.

The hotel was amazing; the beds, not so much. The beds were hard and uncomfortable. I woke up sore both nights. The pillows were hard and uncomfortable. Nice vacation resort, but not to sleep.
