Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge: Bird Watching on the Shores of the Red River
Near the Oklahoma border, 81 miles north of Dallas lies the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1946 and spanning 12,000 acres, the land provides a sanctuary for geese and ducks as they make their annual migrations across the United States. As many as 10,000 geese can be seen in a single field during the high point of their move. But you don’t have to be a bird-lover to enjoy the peace and quiet. Wildflowers bloom attracting butterflies and wildlife from river otters to coyotes can be spotted along the riverbanks. Fishers and boating enthusiasts will love getting out on the waters of the Red River, which stretches west all the way through Texas as well as east through Louisiana.
