From the tee, 564 yards of lush bentgrass unfurl along the shores of Cheat Lake at a dramatic vertical drop of 180 feet. The equally challenging sister course, Mountainview, weaves a sinuous path into the Allegheny forest's undulating foothills. Golfers from far and wide have made the pilgrimage to Lakeview Golf Resort & Spa to challenge course records set by Jack Nicklaus and Sam Snead. Though the forested, 500-acre resort feels like a remote hideaway, it lies conveniently within reach of downtown Morgantown and West Virginia University.
Completed in 1954 by architect James Harrison, the par 72 Lakeview Course still challenges big hitters on its mammoth 18th hole, where no player has ever reached the green in two strokes. After attempting the near impossible, you can unwind at Spa Roma with a soothing massage.
At Legends Sports Bar & Tiki Deck, high-definition televisions broadcast PGA events and divot-filling seminars. The casual eatery serves up jumbo shrimp cocktail ($12) and chicken quesadillas ($8) and the tropical-themed Tiki Deck doubles as a grandstand for Lakeview’s 18th green.
