Hotel at a Glance: Lamb and Lion Inn

Called “a classic Cape Cod inn with the spirit of a small luxury hotel” by Car & Driver, this award-winning pet friendly property has many extras not common with most B&Bs: A solar-heated, salt water pool, year round hot tub, wood-burning fireplaces and a wellness studio. Pets under 30 pounds are welcomed with open arms at Lamb and Lion Inn. The boutique bed and breakfast supplies pet sheets, towels, and water bowls free of charge, and there are numerous dog-friendly trails within walking distance. The innkeepers even have three small dogs of their own and are happy to recommend pooch-friendly beaches and restaurants in the area. In 2013, the inn made CNN’s list of the top 12 pet-friendly properties in the world.

  • In-room amenities: high-end bedding, TV with DVD player, and free WiFi
  • Go for a dip in the outdoor saltwater pool when the weather’s nice. There’s also a hot tub and wood-burning fireplace for chilly nights.
  • Visit the inn’s wellness studio to book a discounted massage, private yoga lesson, Reiki, or a psychic reading. Bookings must be made in advance.
  • Breakfast anytime: The innkeepers set out housemade baked goods, granola, and yogurt for guests to enjoy at their leisure.
  • Go on a whale-watching cruise out of nearby Barnstable Harbor, or take a Nantucket Island excursion out of Hyannis Harbor. Discounted tickets are available from the inn.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts: Historic Towns and Miles of Protected Beaches

In the late 19th century, Cape Cod blossomed into a summer vacation destination as visitors swapped crowded coastal cities for the sandy shores of eastern Massachusetts. Today, the arm-shaped peninsula, located 60 miles south of Boston, encompasses 15 idyllic towns, rolling dunes, and 300 miles of sandy shoreline—and it’s still the place where many East Coasters choose to spend their leisurely summer days. Popular attractions include fresh-seafood restaurants, quaint stores, and bicycle trails, such as the 11-mile Shining Sea Bikeway that wends from North Falmouth to Woods Hole.

On the uppermost tip of the Cape, the free-spirited art colony of Provincetown attracts visitors year-round. This is one of the best places to head for a vibrant nightlife scene—there are cabarets, bars, and lounges aplenty. Pop into the Provincetown Art Association and Museum to check out local artwork, both historical and contemporary.

Along the Lower, or Outer, Cape, the 44,000-acre Cape Cod National Seashore stretches from Orleans to Provincetown and features six swimming beaches, wild cranberry bogs, and miles of walking and biking trails.

Just east of here lies the town of Barnstable, a popular whale-watching spot with several sandy beaches. Between April and November, tour boats take passengers out to sea to catch glimpses of humpback and minke whales.
