Top Reasons to Stay at the Long Barn Lodge

  • Located amid the Stanislaus National Forest in the Sierra Nevadas, the Long Barn Lodge offers plenty of recreational activities, from swimming in the outdoor pool to playing volleyball or horseshoes.
  • The lodge dates back to 1925, when rancher Warren Beal built the structure as a boarding house for travelers heading over the Sonora Pass.
  • Two-queen guest rooms are tucked into the lodge’s main building. Freestanding studio cabins provide ample space for families for four and are equipped with a full kitchen and cable TV.
  • You can venture into town to grab dinner, or borrow one of the lodge’s barbecues to grill your own meal.
  • Yosemite National Park is less than two hours’ drive away. There, you can hike amid waterfalls in spring and early summer, horseback ride down scenic trails, or walk past the cliffs at Yosemite Valley.

Long Barn, California: Fishing, Swimming, and Biking in the Sierra Nevadas

The small, rustic town of Long Barn, California is located within the Stanislaus National Forest in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The area is rife with outdoor activity no matter the season, but it’s particularly vibrant during the summer months. At nearby Pinecrest Lake, you can fish, hike, swim, and boat during the day, and catch an after-dark flick at the Pinecrest Amphitheater. With hundreds of miles of dirt trails and four mountain passes, Long Barn is also a popular destination for both on- and off-road motorcycle riding.

There are also two recommended day trips within a two-hour drive of Long Barn. Two hours east is Bodie, one of California’s most famous ghost towns. Once a gold rush-era boomtown with more than 65 saloons, Bodie was deserted in the early 20th century. Today, it’s a State Historic Park that’s open to the public with 100 well-preserved structures.

Less than 90 miles south of Long Barn lies the entrance to Yosemite National Park, which welcomes millions of annual visitors. Spring is one of the best times to see the park’s famed waterfalls, thanks to the snowmelt brought on by warmer weather. Yosemite Falls—a three-tiered waterfall that’s considered North America’s highest—transforms into thundering cataracts each spring. Serious hikers can trek to the top on the strenuous Upper Yosemite Falls trail, which gains 2,700 feet in elevation in just 3.5 miles.
