Glamorous Oceanfront Resort with Award-Winning Restaurants and Electric Nightlife

Shortly after opening its doors in 1954, the Fontainebleau Miami Beach became a winter stomping grounds for Frank Sinatra and other members of the Rat Pack—which is a pretty reliable indicator of the hotel's glitz-and-glamour factor. Recently, the original Morris Lapidus design underwent a $1 billion expansion and renovation. But purists needn't worry: the Fontainebleau is still grand, its history still reverberates, and its guest list still reads like an issue of Us Weekly (recent sightings have included Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Rihanna). It's just that nowadays the scale is bigger.

The oceanfront hotel's bells and whistles impress by their sheer number: there are 12 restaurants, 10 pools, four clothing boutiques, and a 40,000-square-foot spa. The multistory nightclub, LIV, is an internationally renowned hotspot where DJs spin for ultra-hip revelers including the occasional celebrity or break dancing Supreme Court justice. Each of the hotel's 1,504 rooms features modern décor, 400-thread-count Egyptian-cotton linens, and a Mac for surfing the Internet.

From May 6 to May 20, Miami will serve as host city for the yachts participating in the 2011–12 Volvo Ocean Race. Held once every three years, this round-the-world competition sets sail from Spain in October 2011 and will end in Ireland in July 2012. This Getaway includes VIP passes to the race's sole North American pit stop, the Downtown Miami Village. Attendees can get a look at the six competing yachts and watch sailing and extreme water sports. Organizers have also arranged for interactive games, live music, food, and other events to entertain an expected 150,000 visitors.

Miami Beach: Pristine Oceanfront and Latin-Flavored Cuisine

Set apart somewhat from the most boisterous stretch of South Beach, Miami Beach is famed for its pristine beaches and unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean. Sun worshippers flock to the area year-round to take advantage of temperatures that stay on the good side of 70 degrees, even in winter. The boardwalk, which runs the length of the hotel and down to South Beach, makes an ideal path for jogging, ambling, or reenacting moments from past games of Monopoly.

Delicious restaurants boasting every type of cuisine—and every price point—abound on both sides of the causeway, but no trip to Miami Beach is complete without some authentic Cuban food, such as the medianoche sandwiches available at any local joint. Latin flavor seeps into the music scene, too, inspiring bouts of salsa dancing after a few rum-soaked mojitos. A morning-after swim in the calm Atlantic is a good way to restore equilibrium.
