The basalt surface of Haystack Rock juts out hundreds of feet above the sand and surf on the Cannon Beach oceanfront like a monolith, leaving an unmistakable silhouette that defines the nearby coastline. North of the inns, along Ecola Creek, the small Whale Park displays a wooden statue of a whale in commemoration of Lewis and Clark, who explored the area in 1806 and bartered with Native Americans for whale blubber.
