The Jefferson: Historical Hotel in the Heart of Downtown DC
A decade before he became president, Thomas Jefferson served as an ambassador in Paris for a four-year span that stoked his love of French architecture, arts, and fine foods. The Jefferson’s lavish, Beaux-Arts interior draws inspiration from the Francophile president and embodies the kind of place he might’ve hung his powdered wig. After a recent two-year makeover, the hotel exudes grandeur, from its floor-to-ceiling paintings to the polished parquet floors and painted silk wallpaper. As a tangible tribute to Jefferson, the hotel curates a collection of his curios, including signed documents and period artifacts in the lobby.
An attention to detail permeates the hotel, beginning with the lobby—suggestive of a Parisian salon—and extending to the Italian-marble bathrooms found within each deluxe room. The Jefferson’s trio of restaurants offer outstanding dining in a range of elegant settings. Breakfasts of lobster eggs benedict ($24) are served in the Greenhouse’s sunny atrium. At Plume, baroque sconces cast a glow on a mural of Jefferson’s Monticello vineyard, which whets palettes for an award-winning wine list with more than 1,300 varietals and vintages. The dark wood lounge at Quill is a perfect destination for a nightcap of Master Mind cocktails— spontaneous creations crafted by the bar’s master mixologist.
December 16 and 17 in Downtown DC
The Jefferson occupies a prime address, within short walking distance of many downtown DC landmarks, including the White House, and a couple Metrorail Red Line stops northwest of the National Mall's monuments and museums. During the winter, the sculpture garden’s pool at the National Gallery of Art is transformed into an ice rink, overseen by snowmen lifeguards. On December 16, the National Gallery of Art will also host a special winter concert by pianist Menahem Pressler, during which he'll celebrate his 88th birthday by playing music from Beethoven, whose 241st birthday falls on the same day.
The Holiday Market, also located downtown, returns for its seventh year this winter. More than 175 local artisans set up a village of booths in front of the Smithsonian American Art Museum with an array of artwork, jewelry, clothing, crafts, and specialty-food items. Jazz, Americana, and bluegrass artists will serenade shoppers on the night of December 16.
