Rustic Appalachian Property with Mountain Views and Local Dining

The Toe River Valley weaves between the Blue Ridge Mountains, following the pristine waters of the North Toe River. Along these banks, the Vance Toe River Lodge sits surrounded by mountain scenery, evoking a secluded charm. Built in 1919 as a general store, the property has since expanded to take advantage of its riverfront location. Now, a canopy tour sends visitors careening above runoff creeks via ziplines and swinging bridges, and guests can enjoy a glass of wine or the occasional full meal at the onsite restaurant's decks, which overlook the rushing waters on the North of the Toe River.

The restaurant specializes in local ingredients, including trout raised onsite in the pay-by-the-pound stocked pond, which can also be fished by guests. Although menus vary, meals include vegetarian specialties made with ingredients from the Lodge's own gardens. Dinners are paired with vintages from the onsite boutique winery, such as the Primitivo-style Toe River red.

A mile away from the main building, the Elk Mountain Lodge features a fire pit and a disc-golf course set amid the Appalachian forests. Within the all-wood main building, pool and foosball tables sit beside crackling fireplaces in a central common room. The lodge's full kitchen allows guests to snack on leftovers or construct marzipan models of regional topography.

North Carolina High Country: Mining History and Mountain Trails

North Carolina's western counties are often collectively called the High Country or the Land of the Sky, references to the soaring peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains to the northwest and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the southeast. The village of Plumtree is nestled between these two vast ranges, located near the protected wilderness of the Pisgah National Forest. Hiking trips are common, with most popular trails heading to Linville Falls and past panoramic views of Hawksbill Mountain.

The mountains have proved as useful as they are beautiful, as mining operations in the region were a major force in North Carolina's development. The nearby Museum of North Carolina Minerals chronicles local quartz, mica, and natural deposits of silly putty.
