Canoe Tour Through Glacier Lakes and Comfortable Campsites in Minnesota

In the 18th century, French Canadian fur traders navigated bark canoes along the water routes between Minnesota and Ontario to barter with Native American tribes. Now part of the part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, this 160-mile stretch of more than 1,000 lakes and streams is the setting for Voyageur North Outfitters' expeditions.

With more than 30 years of experience, the Voyageur North Outfitters staff customizes trips through fishing rivers or placid lakes depending on passengers' skill levels. Adventurers paddle Voyageur Ultralight canoes through the Boundary Waters' labyrinth of diverse waterways. Canoes pass by emerald pine forests where moose and white-tailed deer gather after bathing along the rocky shoreline, and narrow rivers teem with smallmouth bass and northern pike.

Between trips, groups rest at single-party campsites outfitted with fire rings, latrines, and raccoon bellhops. Campfires warm cups of hot cocoa and Mirro cooking kits help prepare scrambled eggs, rib-eye steaks, and other preselected meals. Self-supporting Alps tents and Therm-a-Rest sleeping pads keep sleeping campers warm on cool forest nights.

Voyageur North Outfitters is located in Ely, Minnesota, a small town nestled in the North Woods region about two hours north of Duluth. Occupied by Native Americans until the mid 1700s and established as a mining village in 1888, Ely now draws visitors for its camping opportunities. Those staying in town for a night or two can peruse the pine-log cabins and pubs on its main street, or spend a day at the North American Bear Center or the nearby International Wolf Center.
