Horseback Riding and Mountain Biking at Ranch in San Juan Mountains
Los Angeles resident and movie buff Robert Bucksbaum owns Majestic Dude Ranch in southwest Colorado, but he’s not a stereotypical dude-ranch owner. Before purchasing the half-century-old ranch, Bucksbaum spent the better part of a decade running a single-screen movie theater. Movies are still a part of his resort, as outdoor screenings—often Westerns—as well as karaoke and in-line dancing are among the resort's nightly activities. Located at an 8,000-foot elevation in the San Juan Mountains, Majestic Dude Ranch evokes the kind of Old West ambiance commonly seen in classic Western films, making it an ideal spot for riding horseback, roping cattle, or simply relaxing before a campfire.
Majestic Dude Ranch's distinctive red ranch house and cabins welcome visitors with rocking chairs, log furniture, and grizzly bears masquerading as recliners. Campfires blaze at nighttime. Despite the rustic vibe, guests can still take dips in the jacuzzi and sauna. The staff stocks refrigerators with each guest's favorite snacks, and a bottomless cookie jar is filled with freshly baked sweets. This deal also includes daily meals—housemade breakfast includes omelets and waffles, and nightly cookouts may include freshly caught fish or prime rib.
While you’re here, there are several outdoors activities that take advantage of the gorgeous mountain scenery. Majestic Dude Ranch equips guests with cowboy boots and steeds to ride along the winding mountain trails at nearby Mesa Verde National Park, and mountain bikes are available as well. Counselors keep pintsize cowboys entertained with gold panning, hayrides, and hula-hoop cattle roping. Adults can trek to the Animas River for whitewater rafting or fly-fishing, or take a shuttle to the historic mining town of Durango.
Mancos, Colorado: Ancient Dwellings and Stunning Geography in Mesa Verde Country
In southwest Colorado, Mancos rests just 5 miles east of Mesa Verde National Park, which was given national-park status for its 600 ancient Pueblo cliff dwellings. The park is also home to sandstone steppes and ponderosa-pine forests that sprawl across more than 8,000 acres.
About a 45-minute drive east, the town of Durango boasts art galleries, historical museums, and Native American trading posts selling hand-woven Navajo rugs and pottery. An old-fashioned steam locomotive chugs along the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a vintage railway that has operated for more than a century.
