Five-City Sightseeing Tour of China with Round-Trip Airfare and English-Speaking Guide

This 11-day, 9-night tour of China from Marco Polo Tours includes round-trip airfare from Air Canada, United Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Japan Airlines, American Airlines, Korean Air, or Delta Airlines. You’ll visit five cities, spending the most time in Shanghai and Beijing. An English-speaking guide will be on hand to highlight cultural attractions and lead activities in each location.

Click here for a day-by-day itinerary. Here’s a quick rundown of each destination:

Shanghai: Flashy malls, thumping nightclubs, and towering skyscrapers make this a very modern metropolis, but there’s plenty of history to be found here, too—especially in the architecture. Look for art-deco façades in the gallery district and neoclassical buildings on the Bund, a riverside promenade.

Hotel: the five-star Howard Johnson Plaza Waigaoqiao

City-tour highlight: the Shanghai Museum, where 11 galleries showcase some of China’s most treasured relics, including Ming dynasty furniture and calligraphy

Hangzhou: One of China’s most popular scenic destinations, Hangzhou was once described as “the finest, most splendid city in the world” by Italian traveler Marco Polo thanks to its wealth of natural beauty.

Hotel: the four-star Braim Canal Hotel

City-tour highlight: You’ll take a boat ride on the West Lake, passing under the bridges that arch over the water and taking in the lush hillsides skirting the shoreline.

Wuxi: Home to one of the world’s tallest Buddha statues, Wuxi is a culturally rich town with a history stretching back over 3,000 years. It serves as a gateway to Tai Hu, one of China’s largest freshwater lakes.

Hotel: The five-star Landison Plaza Hotel

City-tour highlight: While out on Tortoise Head Garden, a peninsula extending into Tai Hu, you’ll get a sweeping overview of the water and its pagodas. On the head of the turtle-shaped isle stands a small lighthouse and an ancient inscription from the Ming dynasty era.

Suzhou: Known as “Venice of the East”, Suzhou is home to a network of canals, classic gardens, and a collection of silk factories.

Hotel: Howard Johnson Wuzhong Business Club Hotel

City-tour highlight: Just outside of Suzhou, you’ll visit the Tongli Old Town (entrance fee extra), which dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. A tour of the area showcases the waterways and the Retreat and Reflection Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Beijing: China’s capital city went through a growth spurt in the years leading up to its hosting of the 2008 Summer Olympics. There are many sides to the city now, from brand-new skyscrapers to the centuries-old Forbidden City, the largest ancient complex in the country.

Hotel: Vision Hotel

City-tour highlight: During your stay in Beijing, you’ll get a guided tour of the Great Wall, one of the great wonders of the world and reportedly the only manmade structure visible from space.
