Modern Comfort in the Heart of Old Montreal

In May of 1642, a group of French settlers founded Ville-Marie, a colony on the banks of the St. Lawrence River that would eventually become the bustling city of Montreal. Fortunately for history lovers, traces of these early times can still be seen as you stroll through the streets of Old Montreal. The Saint-Sulpice Seminary, erected in the 1680s, stands as the oldest structure in the city, and in Champ-de-Mars park, you can see the base of the fortification walls that once protected the residents there.

Marriott SpringHill Suites Old Montreal is located a stone's throw from these historic sites, yet keeps guests comfortably rooted in the present with spacious suites appointed with modern decor. The larger king suites are roomy and home-like, with two flat-panel TVs, separate living and sleeping areas, and a kitchenette.

A complimentary full-buffet breakfast is served on the mezzanine level each morning. For another trip back in time, you can make a dinner reservation at the adjacent restaurant, L’Auberge Saint-Gabriel. Eric Gonzalez, a Michelin-starred chef, helms the kitchen at this upscale French eatery that began as an inn in 1754. The stone-and-timber interior harks back to the days when Montreal was still surrounded by walls and fur trappers still filled the Metro at rush hour.

Montreal, Quebec: Canada's French-Speaking Cultural Capital

Canada’s second-largest city is set on the Island of Montreal, located about an hour's drive from the northern border of Vermont. The majority of the nearly 2 million inhabitants here speak French as a first language.

Cobbled streets, historic architecture, and horse-drawn carriages make up Old Montreal. A popular spot is the Bonsecours Market, a domed plaza where local merchants have been selling their wares for more than 100 years. As you stroll through this historic area, make sure to check out the iconic and elaborately decorated Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the city's most famous churches. Built in the Gothic Revival style, it houses a fascinating crypt filled with archaeological treasures.

Montreal is renowned for its music and arts scene. The Place des Arts, a huge complex of theaters and concert halls, occupies a whole square downtown. Opera, ballet, symphony, and jazz shows all make appearances on the complex’s calendar.
