Inn at a Glance: Mayhurst Inn

Set amid 37 acres of fragrant magnolia trees and landscaped gardens, this antebellum mansion hasn't changed much since Gen. Stonewall Jackson and Gen. Robert E. Lee hung their hats here. Today, husband-and-wife innkeepers Jack and Pat have meticulously restored the 1859 mansion with period furnishings. If you climb up to the rooftop cupola of this building—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—you can see original glass that still bears graffiti from the Civil War.

  • Great for couples: Share chocolate-covered strawberries and drink from souvenir wine glasses, included with this Getaway.
  • Three-course breakfasts are cooked Southern style each morning.
  • Sip wine and nibble cheese during the daily reception, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Visit local wineries: with certificates for a free wine tasting and discounted tickets to James Madison's Montpelier
  • Recent recognition: awarded TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence and featured on National Geographic Channel's Diggers in 2013

Orange, Virginia: Historic Architecture and Local Wineries

The Blue Ridge Mountains loom in the distance near Orange, where red-brick historic buildings and antebellum homes line the tree-fringed streets. The former railroad town typifies the Old South, from the stately Orange Court Hiouse and Mayhurst's Italianate architecture to the church Gen. Robert E. Lee once attended. Several buildings in Orange are excellent examples of Federal architecture, and many are considered Historic and Antebellum architectures. Visit James Madison's Montpelier, where daily tours showcase the furnishings and jewelry that belonged to President James Madison and Dolley Madison at their Georgian-style estate. War relics and historical farm equipment are also displayed. Just outside Orange, lush valleys and vineyards lie along the Monticello Wine Trail. The temperate climate and fertile soil foster robust cabernets that you can sample at many of the trail's dozens of wineries.
