Solvang, California: A Taste of Denmark in the Santa Ynez Valley
Between the Santa Ynez Mountains to the south and the San Rafael Mountains to the north, the Santa Ynez Valley is home to more than a dozen wineries, several prominent horse ranches, and one very Danish town. That town, Solvang—Danish for "sunny fields"—was established by immigrant Danes in 1911.
The city's settlers have graced this region of Southern California with traditional half-timbered Danish architecture and windmills, as well as a copy of Copenhagen's famous Little Mermaid statue, a bust of Hans Christian Andersen, and a scaled-down replica of the Rundetaarn astronomical tower. Restaurants and pastry shops in town turn out Danish specialties, and visitors can even ride the horse-drawn Hønen, a replica horse-drawn 19th-century street car. The annual Danish Days are held each year in September. For a year-round exploration of the city's history, look no further than the Elverhøj Museum, located in town.
There's also lots to do in Solvang not involving Denmark. For starters, the Chumash Casino Resort on the eastern edge of town features an array of slot machines and table games, plus daily poker tournaments and bingo. Also in town, the Vintage Motorcycle Museum impresses with a private collection of vintage and rare bikes that date back to 1910. You'll also want to explore the Old Mission Santa Inés, the 19th of California's 21 Franciscan missions, which commands sweeping views of the Santa Ynez River Valley and mountains.
