After exchanging their vows, newlyweds Stephanie and Michael Woods fell in love with their reception venue, Mount View Hotel & Spa in Calistoga. In fact, they were so enamored that they decided to buy the boutique hotel, which Michael had been a long-time partner in.
From the moment you enter the hotel’s airy lobby, it’s easy to see how one could fall in love with this place. A thorough face-lift in 2007 has rejuvenated this 100-year-old dame of a hotel, which has seen its share of celebrities, including early Hollywood starlet Jean Harlow. Art-deco light fixtures hang from the tall ceilings, and funky furniture competes with retro wallpaper for attention. In the king Winery suites—each named after a different local winery—striking new appointments such as zebra-print chairs and velvet sofas.
Relaxation comes naturally at this hotel, where guests are not just encouraged, but expected to sleep in and enjoy breakfast in their plush king-size beds. After soaking up the sun by the heated pool, couples can head to the 12-room spa to put their $35 spa credits to use, for services such as a signature massage, classic facial, or body wrap. As the dinner hour nears, guests have a choice of onsite restaurants that specialize in farm-to-table and trattoria cuisine.
Calistoga, California: Easygoing Resort Town Surrounded by World-Class Wineries
A half-hour drive from Napa passes through scenic vine fields to the more laid-back resort town of Calistoga. Though silver mining and agriculture attracted waves of East Coast prospectors at the turn of 20th century, the town’s natural hot springs compelled the settlers to stick around. Today, mission- and western-style buildings stand as a testament to this down-to-earth retreat’s history. But instead of saloon madams or western-film stunt doubles, Bay Area weekenders and wine connoisseurs dot the town’s sidewalks, weaving in and out of charming boutiques, art galleries, and jazz bars.
