I loved how quaint and homey the Inn was. Beautiful views of the water and landscapes naturally bring the sense of peace and relaxation. Multiple fire pits on premises and fire place indoors invite you in to have a seat and hang out, playing board games with friends and family. You feel like you’re staying with friends. It was a refreshing and welcomed experience and we will absolutely return.

Oceanfront views, an old-fashioned candlepin bowling alley, and farm-to-table dining

Historical Inn on Secluded Island

First settled by English fishermen in the 1600s, Newagen has drawn a steady stream of admirers with its rugged coastal landscapes and independent New England spirit. The Today show and Travel + Leisure recently ran features on the island and recommended the Newagen Seaside Inn, praising its seclusion and coastal charm. And it was Newagen’s proximity to the ocean that brought Rachel Carson—noted conservationist and author of Silent Spring—to the area for field research. Carson was a frequent guest at the Newagen Seaside Inn and loved the island so much that she requested her ashes be scattered along its shores.

The Colonial Revival estate sits on the southern coast of Southport Island, which is connected by bridge to Boothbay Harbor and the mainland. The inn's 20-acre grounds offer sweeping ocean views and miles of hiking and biking trails that wind through spruce forests. Thick quilts in coastal colors grace each king or queen bed, but the best guest-room feature might be the conspicuous absence of televisions.

In lieu of channel surfing, you can try your hand at candlepin bowling inside the old-fashioned game room or cannonball in the freshwater pool and hot tub. The onsite dining room features ocean views and a farm-to-table menu that celebrates the area’s abundant seafood—think all-meat crab cakes and fresh-caught lobster. If you're around on a Tuesday, don’t miss out on the lobster bake, with steamer clams, corn on the cob, and potatoes.

Boothbay Harbor: Quaint Coastal Town with Abundant Fresh Seafood

Boothbay Harbor is a postcard-worthy coastal New England town. Its chilly waters abound with seafood—mussels, mackerel, and, of course, Maine lobster—as well as tall ships and charter fishing boats. There are also a few whale-watching boats in town that run half-day trips in search of humpbacks, pilot whales, and tuna. You can explore the area’s small but thriving art scene at The Boothbay Playhouse and the historical Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, which hosts more than 100 events and performances each year.
