Fort Bragg, California: Coastal Bluffs and Colorful Sea-Glass Beaches near Redwood Forests
Located on northwest California’s Pacific Coast, Fort Bragg was founded in the mid-1800s as a military port. Its rocky shores now welcome thousands of tourists each year. On the north end of town is the popular Glass Beach, named for the smooth, colorful sea glass strewn along the shoreline. While beautiful, the glass actually comes from automobile parts and glass bottles dumped into the Pacific Ocean between 1906 and 1967. Over the years, the ocean slowly eroded the trash, transforming it into the smooth glass that dots the beach.
To explore Fort Bragg, go for a bike ride along Ten Mile Beach Trail and over the Pudding Creek Trestle, a redwood bridge built in 1916 for local trains. Or, hop on the historical [Skunk Train] (http://www.skunktrain.com/), which chugs along the Mendocino Coast, past massive redwood trees. For another look at Northern California’s famous redwoods, drive an hour southeast to Montgomery Woods State Reserve, where trees have reached record-breaking heights of 378 feet tall.
