Modern Oceanfront Hotel Steps from Beach
Hordes of families descend on Cancun every year to enjoy its powdery white sand beaches and activities for guests of all ages. The glitzy hotel zone is lined with rows of beachfront chaise lounges and has world-class windsurfing. Despite the commercialized feel of this area, the downtown area—located just minutes away—feels more distinctly Mexican: there are taco stands, wine bars serving pinot grigio, and street vendors selling handmade sombreros. Oasis Viva lies in the heart of the hotel zone, and it’s worth it to split time between sunbathing on the resort's 650-foot stretch of beach and absorbing a bit of the local culture, such as on a tour of nearby fishing villages.
There’s a modern, upscale air to most of the hotel zone, and Oasis Viva captures that same vibe. It has marble floors and pillow-top beds in every room. Of the two beachfront pools, one includes a swim-up bar, and both are surrounded by lush gardens. The hotel also leads directly into Playa Viva, a secluded beach area with calm, swimmable waters.
Five onsite restaurants offer a wide variety of cuisines, ranging from Mexican to Mediterranean. Rodizio serves up Brazilian steakhouse fare, and Akeru specializes in sushi.
Cancun: Pristine Beaches, Underground Rivers, and Underwater Museums
Cancun sits on a peninsula and has 14 miles of Caribbean shoreline, so naturally it’s best known as a beach getaway. But dig deeper and you’ll find some natural treasures that might not be as obvious— including one of the world's longest underground river systems.
Known as the Secret River, this Mayan underworld consists of a network of mineral-rich streams and caves with stalactites and stalagmites hanging overhead. It was discovered in 1997 when a collapsed sinkhole revealed the underground passages; after eight years of mapping the site and outfitting it with strobes, operators opened the Secret River to the public. During the tour of the cave, your only sources of light will be from those strobes, your headlamp, or the flashlight of an usher dressed as Batman.
You can swim with dolphins and ride a zipline over the sea at Garrafon Natural Reef Park, located at Isla Mujeres, which lies about 8 miles from the coast of Cancun. While here, you’ll also find a Mayan Temple and underwater museum, which features more than 400 life-size sculptures submerged in a barren seabed around the island. These statues are made out of materials that promote coral life and thus act as artificial reefs. They sit close to the surface, and you can easily see them when diving, snorkeling, or riding a glass-bottomed boat.
