8-Day New Zealand Vacation with Airfare
Visitors to New Zealand find a land resembling something from a fairytale—exotic gardens span the most populous cities and icy glaciers jut out from lush rainforests. You'll explore this spectacular country at your own pace during this 8-day vacation, which includes a rental car. Accommodations are made in three New Zealand regions, and you can extend your trip by adding an optional extension to spend a day basking in Fiji's sun-swept beaches. Included in all options:
- Round-trip airfare from LAX
- 8-Day Jucy Car Rentals Package
- 2 nights standard accommodations at Ibis Christchurch in Christchurch
- 3 nights courtyard room accommodations at Tanoa Aspen Hotel in Queenstown
- 2 nights studio accommodations at Sunset Motel near Fox Glacier
- (if 1 night in Fiji option is selected) 1 night standard accommodations at Mercure Hotel in Fiji
Christchurch
Christchurch is one of the South Island's biggest cities, nicknamed "the Garden City" for the lush nature reserves and parks that span roughly one-eighth of the metropolis. Along the Avon River, flat-bottomed wooden gondolas (or punts, as locals call them) glide past weeping willows and dense green thickets in the heart of the city.
- Meet the penguins at the International Antarctic Centre, a multimedia attraction that focuses on all things Antarctica.
- Christchurch Botanic Gardens: Wander beneath fragrant rose archways and through maze-like hedgerows in this city jewel, which has been around since 1863. Rare orchids, banana trees, and cacti also bloom amid the gardens' greenhouses and reflecting pools.
- Canterbury Museum celebrates the region's colorful history and culture with an extensive collection of historic pottery, elaborate period costumes, and artwork.
Queenstown
After two nights in Christchurch, you'll drive south to Queenstown, where you can go whitewater rafting down the Shotover River, Bungee jump from a cliff above the Kawarau River, or zipline through a canopy of towering pine trees. Aptly nicknamed the "Adventure Capital of the World," Queenstown has served as the backdrop for several scenes in The Lord of the Rings.
- Ride the Skyline Gondola nearly 1500 feet up to Bob's Peak for unparalleled views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu.
- Take a boat ride on Lake Wakatipu to see the Southern Alps against the horizon.
- Famous wineries: This region of New Zealand is renowned for its wineries, which are especially popular for its pinot noir.
Fox Glacier
After three nights in Queenstown, you'll drive back north towards the West Coast to Fox Glacier. Nearly 1,000 feet deep, this massive glacier stretches for eight miles from the icy Southern Alps to the edge of a rainforest. In fact, it's one of just a handful of glaciers in the world partially located in a rainforest. The glacier and its counterpart—Franz Josef Glacier—are part of the Westland National Park, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its diverse ecology.
- Explore the glacier: Take a guided hike over icy crags or ride a helicopter to see the glacial behemoth from overhead.
- Lake Matheson: Placid and mirror-like, this nearby lake reflects a stunning image of Mount Tasman.
If you opt for the one-night Fiji extension, you can take time to snorkel the azure waters surrounding the islands, visit local villages, or simply lay on the beach.
