Days 1-2: Flight to New Zealand

An overnight flight takes you to Auckland, New Zealand.

Days 3-4: Auckland

Arrive in Auckland. Beautiful beaches, volcanic hills, and harbors filled with brightly colored sailboats surround this bustling metropolis on the country’s North Island. It’s often called the “City of Sails,” as it has more boats per capita than anywhere else in the world. You’ll pick up your rental car in Auckland and your schedule is open to explore the city at your own pace until you set out for the Bay of Islands.

  • Waitemātā Harbour: Go kayaking or sailing in the city’s biggest harbor or enjoy the view over a meal at one of the waterfront bistros.
  • Sky Tower: Aside from the beach, the best place to see an Auckland sunset is on the sky deck of this 1,000-foot skyscraper.
  • Auckland Museum: An ancient war canoe and traditional Maori artifacts help chronicle Auckland’s rich past. Other exhibits include a simulated volcanic eruption.

Days 5-6: Bay of Islands

Next, you’ll hop in your car and cruise north to the Bay of Islands. Many Aucklanders make this three-hour drive to escape city life and go snorkeling alongside dolphins in the bay’s turquoise waters. While you’re here you can tour the surrounding dunes and old-growth forests or stick close to the beach with a cocktail in hand before heading to Rotorua.

  • Waipoua Forest: Massive kauri trees have dominated the landscape here for more than a thousand years. HIke the trails to see native trees and to spot kingfishers and cuckoos rustling through the brush.
  • Cruise Cape Brett: Rock formations jut out into the water and create a giant “hole in the rock” archway that boats can glide through. You might encounter dolphins, whales, and penguins along the way.

Days 7-11: Auckland, Rotorua and Tahiti

Drive back to Auckland and stay for a night before driving to Rotorua. Stop and visit the Hobbiton Movie Set on your way to Rotorua. Or spend Days 8 and 9, marveling at Roturua’s geothermal activity. Take a dip in bubbling hot springs and watch geysers shooting into the sky.

Your trip comes to a close in the French Polynesian paradise of Tahiti. The island is dotted with torch-lit beaches where you can dig your toes in rich black sand. Groves of fruit trees supply ingredients for many local restaurants.

  • Tour Waitomo Caves in Rotorua to a grotto lit up by tiny glowworms.
  • Marché de Pape’ete: Locals sell exotic fruit and fresh coconuts alongside hand-woven hats and jewelry made from shells.

Day 12: Return Flight to the United States
