You’ll take a city tour on day 3 to see some of the city’s most significant sights, including:
- One Pillar Pagoda: One of the country’s most iconic temples is this wooden structure, designed to resemble a lotus blossom and set on a single stone pillar.
- Temple of Literature: Dedicated to the Chinese philosopher Confucius, this remarkably well-preserved pagoda dates to the 11th century.
- Old Quarter: Wander Hanoi’s historic center, a series of meandering streets that are home to food vendors, beer stalls, little temples, and traditional water puppet shows.
Days 4–5: Halong Bay
On day 4, you’ll be driven to Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where emerald-green waters surround forested islands, creating a dramatic bayside scene. You’ll take a scenic cruise and spend the night in a boat.
- Don’t take our word for it: Lonely Planet calls Halong Bay’s island seascape “spectacular” and “a vision of ethereal beauty.”
- Back to Hanoi: After brunch on the boat, you’ll return to Hanoi.

Days 6–7: Hue and Hoi An
To see 19th-century Vietnam, you have to visit Hue. Vietnam’s political and cultural capital from 1802 to 1945, Hue has several fascinating historical sites, including the Citadel, a moat-ringed fortification that protected the Nguyen Dynasty’s royal palaces.
- Royal Antiquities Museum: Check out the Nguyen royalty’s collection of jewels, costumes, and other artifacts.
