Hotel at a Glance: Parador Combate Beach
Parador Combate Beach is located inside the lush Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge, which you can easily explore on a hiking, biking, or kayaking trip. It's also just a short walk from the white sands and crystal-clear waters of Combate Beach. In addition to excellent swimming and sunbathing, the beach has some of the best sunset views in Puerto Rico.
- Local wildlife: Many migratory and endemic birds make homes in the surrounding reserve, including large populations of doves.
- Rentable gear: mountain bikes and kayaks (some options of this Getaway include a two-hour kayak rental)
- Onsite dining: XABORES Cyber Cafe serves omelets, french toast, and other favorites for breakfast; head into town and you can find even more dining options.
- Get a massage: A pair of certified massage therapists are onsite, offering more than 12 massages and body treatments. Play around: there are adult and children's pools, a sand volleyball court, and a half basketball court.
Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico: Uncrowded Beaches and Local Culture
Cabo Rojo is a bit off the beaten path—about a 2-hour drive from the nearest major international airport—and the lack of crowds is part of its appeal. The beautiful beaches don't hurt, either: the town lies right along the secluded west coast of Puerto Rico, which has sandy shores and towering oceanfront cliffs. The beaches along Boquerón Bay are particularly nice; the bay has nearly a mile of white-sand beachfront and calm, clear water that makes it excellent for swimming. The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is another must-see spot. It too has pristine beaches, as well as large populations of migratory birds and 12 miles of hiking trails.
One of the town's most popular attractions is the Los Morrillos Lighthouse, perched atop 200-foot limestone cliffs. While the still-operational lighthouse is on the smaller side, the ocean views are breathtaking.
It's also worth it to pay a visit to Cabo Rojo's main plaza, a couple of miles inland. Lined with colorful stucco buildings, the plaza has a distinct character that can be hard to find on the more-touristy east coast. It's a great place to get to know the locals—known as Caborrojeños—and explore family-owned shops and restaurants (the town's fresh seafood is a must-try).
