Property at a Glance: Poets Cove Resort and Spa

Water and fire are typically believed to be polar opposites, incapable of coexisting. But they thrive together at Poets Cove. The island resort is right on the water, and its lodge rooms have views of the lapping waters through west-facing windows that frame blazing sunsets each evening. After sundown, you can stay warm in front of the flames of your in-room fireplace.

  • If it floats your boat: Poets Cove’s marina ranks as one of the best in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Water, water everywhere: In addition to the harbor, the resort has two pools and multiple hot tubs.
  • In-room amenities: Each lodge room is equipped with a balcony, soaking tub, glass-enclosed shower, and fireplace.
  • Never go hungry: Take a coffee or ice-cream break at Moorings Cafe or grab an outdoor table for breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Syrens Bistro and Lounge.
  • Pick up a bottle of wine at the onsite liquor store to sip on your balcony.
  • Added perk: Groupon guests get daily access to the steam cave and hot tub at Susurrus Spa. The spa also offers a wide variety of massages and other relaxing treatments for an additional fee.
  • Friend to the earth: A recycling container in every room and an onsite garden full of local herbs and produce are just a couple of things that helped the hotel earn the Green Key distinction.

Pender Island, British Columbia: Gulf Island Between Victoria and Vancouver

Pender Island sits in the Salish Sea, conveniently located between Vancouver Island and mainland Vancouver. Its main two locales are North Pender and South Pender, which are separated by a canal. A narrow bridge connects the two sides. Though the island is small, it has all the beautiful features that attract visitors to British Columbia: clear lakes, rugged coastlines, and spectacular wildlife. From May to October, you can cruise through nearby inlets and see orca and humpback whales, as well as seals, sea lions, and dolphins.

We got to the hotel and upon arrival was told that the lounge wasn't going to be open till the weekend and that we could order pizza instead or if we wanted a sit down dinner we could drive 20 minutes to the Browning marnia pub. Annoyed I then asked where the steam cave was and was informed that it was broken and that there was the outdoor hot tub instead (at this point it's raining outside). I was annoyed that I wasn't informed prior to my arrival to any of this but didn't want to let it ruin our evening. So we went to our room 308 where as beautiful as it was there was some black almost looked like burn marks in the carpet by the gas fireplace but the view was beautiful. Because I was sore from our morning of hiking I was really looking forward to using the steam cave but settled for a bath instead. When I started the water I was disgusted to find the water brown. I ran it for a few minutes and when it was still brown I checked the sink and shower to find the water running brown as well. I phoned the front desk to inform them and was told to let it run more and that it hasn't been used in a while. No offer to come look at It, no apologies. Just let it run. I let it run for 15 more minutes and was getting very angry. I then heard maintainence outside our room (there had been a light fixture just left on the floor when we came in) and told him what was happening. He said he would go look into the pipes and water heater. So we sat in our room waiting to hear back. And after 15 minutes and looking at how gross the bath tub was, I went to the front desk. The maintanance man was just walking up to front desk and I went to ask him what was happening and Christine came up at the same time.  He said he checked the rooms around us and that the rooms had been used since December so he will check the pipes going to our room. Christine said again to let it run more and it should be fine. At that point I said well the bath tub is disgusting and she said she would get house keeping to come clean it. I then had to ask to change rooms as the thought of the smell and look of the bathtub just put me off. I was then told that tomorrow was going to be very busy and didn't know if we could but after looking At the computer we were moved to 307. The water was fine but there was more black burnt marks in the carpet, the fireplace didn't turn on and the dial on the wall of the fire place was broken and dangling and most of the dvds we borrowed from front desk didn't work.
