Luxury Villas near Belize Barrier Reef

The beaches along Ambergris Caye in Belize have a dark color to them; early cartographers dubbed the island Costa de Ambar, or Amber Coast. The sand gets its color from ambergris, a substance emitted by sperm whales, which still sometimes wash ashore.

A small bridge leads from the amber beach to Reef Village Resort, whose own villas are painted in jewel tones of sapphire and citrine. The network of condominiums and villas features open floor plans with private verandas, bubbling jacuzzi tubs, and Mexican-tile floors, all kept cool by central air conditioning.

The resort's restaurant and bar is adjacent to the outdoor pool. It's partially covered by thatched umbrellas, and at night, votive candles and strings of twinkle lights add to the festive atmosphere as guests enjoy karaoke. There's an onsite movie theater, too.

If you want to venture out, the hotel staff can arrange excursions and tours of the nearby coral reefs, popular fishing and diving spots, and Mayan ruins.

San Pedro, Belize: Tranquil Island Encircled by Coral Reefs

On Ambergris Caye, an island off the northeast coast of Belize, life is easygoing. You can get sweeping views of glassy azure water; the island has been lauded by Travel + Leisure magazine as one of the best islands in the world.

Half a mile away from San Pedro you'll find the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The reef is home to more than 500 species of fish, dozens of corals, and a large population of West Indian manatees. At the Blue Hole, a 412-foot-deep crater first explored by Jacques Cousteau in 1970, brave divers plunge in despite the fact that it's also home to hammerhead sharks. You can snorkel alongside sharks and stingrays at Shark Ray Alley, a sandbar within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, or hop a boat to cast off for snapper, grouper, or larger catches such as marlin and tuna.

Back on land, it's worth it to make the trip to nearby Mayan ruins such as Bacalar Chico, a channel built by the Mayans nearly 1,500 years ago, located at the north side of the island. In downtown San Pedro, you’ll find an array of sandy barefoot bars and cafés built on stilts, as well as shops filled with local art, jade jewelry, and diving gear.
