Texas Hill Country: Pastoral Landscape of Ranches, Rivers, and German American Towns

A picturesque region of rolling hills and valleys covered in bluebonnets in spring, the area of central Texas known as Texas Hill Country has been compared to the landscape of Tuscany by the New York Times. Texas Hill Country is a backyard playground for nearby cities, as it lies just west of Austin and northwest of San Antonio. Urbanites often escape here for the weekend to enjoy the slower pace and beat the heat—the region’s slightly higher elevation means it’s often less humid. With many state parks and spring-fed rivers, the Hill Country is also a haven for outdoorsy types; activities range from fishing and tubing to rock climbing. The Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is popular thanks to its main attraction: a gigantic pink-granite dome in the middle of the park.

We stayed at Birds Eye Perch. It was fantastic. My boyfriend and I wanted to get away to celebrate our birthdays and this was a fantastic place to do just that. It's close to several things such as cave tours, hiking, delicious restaurants (I would recommend the very first post office in Texas that was turned into a restaurant), coffee at cafes (I would recommend Kafekali--amazing pastries and breakfast food), Canyon Lake Overlook, these are just a few things to do. The cabin is beautiful and sleeps more than just two people. However, the hot water does not last longer than about 7 minutes. So for two people to shower, you need to get wet, turn the water off, soap up, and then rinse off. You have to do this very fast. Then you should wait a little while for the water to heat up again before the second person showers. Also, the front door was a clear pane of glass with no curtain. Anyone could see in; we put an auto sun visor lengthwise over the door for privacy. Other than those two things, the stay was fantastic. Even though I enjoyed the cabin, next time I will stay somewhere that has hot water so I can shower.

It was fun, and a little unique.I think it needs too be said that the cabins are not "up" in the trees, but cantilevered over a dry river bank integrated in a grove of trees. Some of the infrastructure is getting old and needs to be updated. After checking in at 3:30 pm and check out at 11 am, there is not enough daylight to do much outdoor activity, so you should book more than a day.
