Placencia

Just off Belize’s southeastern coast, the scenic Placencia Peninsula juts into the Caribbean and runs parallel to the mainland for 16 miles. At its southernmost tip, you’ll find the namesake Placencia village, surrounded by pristine beaches, mangrove-filled lagoons, and tropical rainforests. You can explore the unspoiled land while hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, or kayaking—all popular pursuits here. Scuba divers flock to the area for renowned diving along the nearby Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. It spans 185 miles and brims with reef sharks, loggerhead turtles, and moray eel.

Belize City

After rising to prominence in the 1600s, Belize City still retains its old-world Caribbean charm. Colonial-style homes and seaside parks line its streets, and Central America’s oldest Anglican church, St. John’s Cathedral, is situated near the shore. The nearby Museum of Belize is located in a 19th-century jail, and it documents the country’s history and culture via historical and artistic relics. The Caribbean Sea that surrounds this small city’s peninsula is almost always dotted with sailboats. Take a charter boat or water taxi to the nearby cayes for some beach time and scuba diving.

There are also plenty of attractions located in the greater Belize District. Among these are the Altun Ha Mayan ruins, an ancient ceremonial center where you can explore numerous temples and the tombs of the ruling elite. Another is the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, a sprawling wetland that’s home to endangered Mexican black howler monkeys, yellow-headed parrots, and Hickatee turtles.
