Victorian Inn with Alehouse and Deli

There’s an absence of modern distractions at San Benito House, an old-fashioned inn constructed in 1905. There are no phones or televisions in the guest rooms, leaving you free to enjoy the simpler pleasures on hand—craft beer and conversation at the onsite alehouse, for example. It’s a festive atmosphere that mirrors its setting in Half Moon Bay, a small town along the Pacific coast, a short drive south of San Francisco.

The walls of the San Benito Ale House are decked out with chalkboards displaying a menu of sausages and 18 craft beers. Sample local and imported brews by the bottle or from taps or grab heartier fare, putting your $10 daily dining credit to good use. On warm nights, parties at the Ale House spill out onto the deck and garden, which is equipped with a fire pit for added ambience. During the day, you can head to the onsite San Benito Deli for a sandwich made with fresh-baked whole-wheat, french, or olive-walnut bread.

The recently renovated guest rooms are decorated with antique furnishings; in one room, a floor-to-ceiling headboard is carved out of antique doors. In the bathrooms, you might find a Victorian claw-foot tub or a porthole made of stained glass.

Keep in mind that the walls are somewhat thin in this 100-year-old building. If it’s loud in the alehouse, you can sometimes hear it in your room, so light sleepers might want to weigh their options.

Half Moon Bay, California: Historical Town on the Bay Area Peninsula

Charming buildings dating back to the 19th century line Main Street in Half Moon Bay, a seaside town on a peninsula about 29 miles south of San Francisco. But there’s no short supply of upscale restaurants, galleries, and boutiques thanks to its proximity to wealthy Silicon Valley. Local farms and coastal wineries supply eateries with seasonal fare and tasty varietals.

At Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, small pools fill up along the shore at low tide, revealing hermit crabs and starfish. You can explore the area’s rocky terrain on your own or follow along with a volunteer naturalist, who will gladly point out critters in the sandy coves and monterey cypress trees in the forest.

About San Benito House

A turn-of-the-century hotel built in 1905, San Benito House welcomes visitors with 11 inviting guest rooms, a romantic suite, and a full-service bar and restaurant. Servers ferry pizza, pasta, and Niman Ranch hormone-free burgers to wooden booths as patrons converse in an airy atmosphere. On Wednesdays–Saturdays, live musicians enliven the bar as the audience sips imported beers and knits dentures, inspired by the building's old age. Queen-size beds await visitors amid flowing curtains and salmon- or eggshell-colored walls. The inn also hosts catered weddings replete with bar service, a garden reception area, and cannons for launching bouquets.
