Southwestern Adobe Lodge at Foot of Taos Mountain

At the foot of Taos Mountain, gravel paths form a stone labyrinth 50 feet in diameter, and river rocks present a tree-lined prayer path that wraps around the San Geronimo Lodge. Both of these are part of lodge’s recent renovations, which enhance its serene, spiritual atmosphere without taking away from its historical significance as one of Taos’s first resort hotels. The owners have preserved the high viga ceilings and thick adobe walls while adding adornments such as Talavera-tile bathrooms. It makes for a tranquil for exploring nearby Taos’s artistic legacy or visiting one of the area’s skiing opportunities, including Angel Fire Resort, Red River Ski Area, and Taos Ski Valley, each within an hour drive.

The lodge’s authentic, southwestern spirit can be seen everywhere, from the meditation stations outfitted with bells and statues to the individually decorated guest rooms. These rooms come furnished with a kiva fireplace, original oil paintings, and handmade southwestern furniture. French doors lead to private decks and covered verandas overlooking nearby apricot trees and the mountains. Other rooms face the six-person hot tub, which remains accessible year-round at a winter-defying temperature of 104 degrees.

Mornings begin with a full, hot breakfast, which includes entrees such as blue-corn blueberry pancakes, spinach frittatas, and breakfast burritos served with homemade salsa.

Taos, New Mexico: Rural Mountain Town with Thriving Art Scene and World-Class Skiing

Sitting at a lofty 7,000-foot altitude on a rolling mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos buzzes with artistic activity and outdoor pursuits. Taos Ski Valley challenges winter-sports enthusiasts with steep slopes and a peak elevation of nearly 12,000 feet. Here, dry powder coats the alpine-studded slopes of the Rockies and 110 trails and bowls cut through the area—half of which are steep inclines designed for expert skiers and snowboarders. The flatter terrain at Angel Fire Resort—about 45 minutes east of Taos—is better suited to beginners and offers a lowrider park with a set of small rails for practicing snowboarding skills and sharpening icicles to fend off snowman salesmen.

Preserved historical buildings house more than 50 art galleries, fine-dining restaurants, and shops selling locally made jewelry. Taos has inspired many artists, including D.H. Lawrence and Georgia O'Keeffe, with its scenic landscape and culture spanning from ancient Taos Pueblo people to Spanish colonial influences. The multitude of artists who’ve been drawn to Taos are represented in the area's museums, including the Taos Art Museum, which was once the home of Russian painter and woodcarver Nicolai Fechin.

I LOVED the environment. The staff made sure that we were comfortable at all times. It was a very friendly place with knowledgeable staff members. And, they have the yummiest gluten-free bread I've ever tasted!
