Mendocino Coast, California: Small Towns Along Scenic Oceanfront and Redwood Forests

Located about three hours north of San Francisco, Northern California’s Mendocino Coast is a region filled with tiny towns, art colonies, and varied terrain. Within a few minutes of one another are sunlit valleys, fertile vineyards, rocky headlands blanketed by fog, and serene forests of old-growth redwoods. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens showcase the area’s geographical diversity through its native rhododendrons, prickly succulents, and colorful blooms stretching to the ocean.

Partially because of its scenic land and sea scapes, the coast is popular with painters, who gather in artists’ collectives such as the Mendocino Art Center. To see the land that inspires local artwork, head to Russian Gulch, Mendocino Headlands, or any of the region’s coastal state parks. At Mendocino Headlands State Park, waves crash into carving arches, grottos, and stony bluffs, while MacKerricher State Park north of Fort Bragg contains dramatic sand dunes.

Although normally quiet, the region comes alive during a series of whale festivals every March and April, when California gray whales pass by the coast as they migrate from Mexico to Alaska. You’ll find one of the best vantage points for whale watching at Point Cabrillo Light Station, a lonely lighthouse first lit in 1909.

The location is perfect--can't beat that--I love the old redwood of the inn, too. But the inn doesn't feel well kept up. It's not dirty but it's a little sad. Could use some sprucing up.

First night, we were not able to rest early & sleep because of the inn takers & their friends noises in the kitchen. They were very loud. Water pressure in the shower bath was very weak. Breakfast was prepared late 2 days in a row. Not a gourmet bk

Usually bed and breakfast establishments are very nicely decorated, clean, quaint and pampering. This place was NONE of these. First, the innkeeper was not there to greet us when we arrived. We had to locate our room on our own. There was no welcome tour of facilities. The room decor looked like someone gathered a variety of furniture and threw it into the room. The bedding linen was creased and sheets badly wrinkled. I had to remake the bed because the duvet was hanging over more on one side than the other. That is when I discovered the wrinkled sheets. The sheets looked like they were thrown in a basket, not folded at all, and placed on the bed. The bottom fitted sheet was too small. It appeared the bottom sheet used was for a king size bed and the mattress was a California king. The blanket used was "stuffed" underneath the mattress, a child could make a bed neater than this one was made. There was no trash can in the room. We had to ask for one. The bathroom had dead bugs in its. The toiletries provided were Soft Soap and VO5 in the original containers they came in. The bathroom linen didn't even match. There were 3 windows in the room. One was missing the bottom blinds. We had to use one of our beach towels to cover the window. Appetizers were to be served at 5:30. There were no appetizers as the innkeeper still had not returned. We felt like someone had already been living in the room and just removed their clothing, temporarily, so we could spend the night. Both my husband and I spent a very restless night there. We were so uncomfortable that we didn't even shower there. Who knows if the towels were even clean. We decided to leave first thing in the morning, without breakfast, and told the innkeeper of our plans. Upon his insistence we reluctantly agreed to stay for toast and coffee. When we got our toast, we were given jam that was served in the original jars, 1/2 already gone. Before our stay, I looked up this establishment on the internet and reviewed the ratings. There were a lot of negative comments. However, I had already purchased this Groupon. The innkeeper told us that there were updating their website and putting in new pictures. After we returned, I wanted to review the comments I had read earlier to compare them with our experience and all the negative comments were gone. Poof. Now there was nothing but glowing remarks. I thought to myself, these people surely didn't stay at the same place we did!!! After this experience, I am now very reluctant to make lodging purchases from Groupon. I suggest Groupon be a little more careful about what products/services you agree to offer the consumer. This B&B experience was the absolute worst experience I have ever had!!!!!
