Hotel at a Glance: Saugatuck Harbor Inn

A picturesque harbor stretches out behind the Saugatuck Harbor Inn, painting quite the backdrop for the bed and breakfast. The inn was constructed in 1871 as the home of a shipbuilder; it’s since been remodeled with new furniture and decor, but the views of the water remain as scenic as ever.

  • Breakfast outside: Wake up and enjoy it on the sunny front porch.
  • Where you’ll stay: Individually decorated guest rooms feature charming details such as four-poster beds, claw-foot tubs, and fireplaces.
  • Room with a view: The Lady Anne room features vistas of the harbor.
  • Out and about: Walk to downtown restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques.
  • Dive in for a swim in the outdoor pool at neighboring Arrowhead Resort.

Saugatuck, Michigan: Scenic Lakeside Town Voted “Best Summer Weekend Escape”

There are many charming beach towns along the east coast of Lake Michigan, but Saugatuck is considered one of the best. USA Today readers chose Saugatuck as the “Best Summer Weekend Escape” in 2014, and Budget Travel named Saugatuck among the “Coolest Small Towns in America” in 2010 thanks in part to its old-fashioned feel and scenic Lake Michigan coastline.

You can reach Oval Beach, Saugatuck’s most popular stretch of sand, by crossing the Kalamazoo River on a circa-1838 hand-crank ferry. At Oval Beach, families picnic on the sandy shores and splash in Lake Michigan, then kick back on a bench to catch the colorful sunset over the lake.

The waterfront sunsets and bright-red lighthouses have served as inspiration for painters and sculptors; the area encompassing Saugatuck and its neighboring village, Douglas, has been dubbed “The Art Coast of Michigan.” Stop inside the galleries and boutiques clustered along Water and Butler Streets in Saugatuck to find work by local and national artists.

Coastal dunes tower more than 200 feet in the air at Saugatuck Dunes State Park; from the top, you can get beautiful views of the water. One of the most popular pastimes in the area is riding dune buggies—all-terrain vehicles with massive tires that whip up and down the dunes. Numerous outfits in town offer buggy tours. The park itself also features four trails that are well suited for cross-country skiing in winter, too.
