About 90 minutes west of Denver, Copper Mountain is a well-known wintertime destination that was recently named one of the best ski resorts in North America by Outside magazine. But you can still enjoy the mountain scenery once spring and summer roll around. Take a chairlift ride—the ride is free if you spend $10 in Copper Village—and you can access miles of hiking and downhill biking trails, spread amid the mountain’s grassy meadows and densely wooded groves.
SkyRun Vacation Rentals’ condos are scattered across a few villages at the base of Copper Mountain, all with easy access to warm-weather activities.
The one-bedroom and two-bedroom condos feature unique layouts with varying amenities, such as in-unit laundry, a gas or wood-burning fireplace, or private sauna. But each of them have full kitchens and include free access to an athletic club with indoor pool and hot tub.
There are plenty of places to shop and dine in each village: the beloved JJ’s Rocky Mountain Tavern, a pub in East Village, is known for its stone-oven pizzas and regularly scheduled live music.
Copper Mountain, Colorado: Alpine Activities for All Seasons
Like many of the mountain towns scattered throughout central Colorado, Copper Mountain sprung up in the mid 1800s as a mining village. The village got its name from the main export at the time: copper. Today, Copper Mountain is best known as a skiing and snowboarding destination. Situated about 90 minutes west of Denver, the surrounding peaks feature dozens of well-maintained trails spanning multiple skill levels. Outside recently named it one of the best ski resorts in North America for the low staff-to-guest ratio and high safety ratings.
In the spring and summer, alpine hiking and mountain biking trails open up. The American Eagle chairlift can take you to the highest trails; it continues to operate throughout the warmer months, offering scenic chairlift rides for free (with a minimum purchase in Copper Village). It may be worth your while to buy a summer activity pass—it’s valid for unlimited access to chairlift rides, go-carts, climbing walls, and scooter rentals. There’s also the 18-hole Copper Creek Golf Course, which wends through alpine terrain set with tall pines and burbling streams.
After a day in the higher altitudes, head back the base of the mountain to check out the town. Copper Mountain is divided into three villages (East, West, and Center), and all have plenty of local shops, bars, and restaurants serving a range of international cuisine.
