10-Day Tour of Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai

  • Round-trip airfare via Air China from San Francisco (SFO) or New York (JFK)
  • 3 nights of deluxe accommodations at the Pentahotel in Beijing
  • 2 nights of deluxe accommodations at the Grand Metropark Hotel in Xi’an
  • 3 nights of deluxe accommodations at the Crowne Plaza Shanghai Fudan or Hotel Equatorial Shanghai
  • All flights and ground transportation within China

  • Sightseeing tours as described in itinerary
  • English-speaking tour director and local guides

Day 1: Flight to China

You’ll spend the first day of the trip traveling from the United States to Beijing.

Days 2–7: Beijing and Xi’an

The trip kicks off in Beijing, China’s lively capital city. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your hotel in downtown Beijing and join the group for a welcome dinner with the tour director. The next morning, you’ll visit the Great Wall of China, where you can snap pics of the 4,000-mile structure before viewing the sacred Ming Tombs.

  • Visit the Forbidden City during an optional excursion on Day 4 ($65/person; includes lunch). This is where emperors resided during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and is a dazzling display of Chinese architecture.
  • Leisure time: If you’d rather hang back on Day 4, feel free. You can check out Tiananmen Square and other local sites at your own pace.
  • Tiananmen Square: Once the gateway to China’s Imperial Palace, it’s now a popular historical site. Mao Zedong’s remains are on display at the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, and there are artifacts from the Ming dynasty at the National Museum of China.
  • Peking duck and kung fu: You can join the group for an optional banquet on the evening of Day 4 ($50/person). The event includes a Peking duck dinner and a breathtaking Legends of Kung Fu show.
  • Xi’an’s Terra Cotta Army: Carved during the 3rd century BC and rediscovered in the mid-1970s, these thousands of stone soldiers and horses have an interesting secret: no two are alike.

Days 7–10: Shanghai and Departure

On Day 7, you’ll fly to Shanghai, the “bright pearl” along the Yangtze River. You’ll have ample leisure time to see the landmarks on your own, or join the rest of the group for optional side trips.

  • City God Temple dates back to the 15th century and features ornate pavilions and teahouses. Outside, vendors hawk incense, jewelry, and candy.
  • The Bund: Dozens of historical buildings in more than 50 architectural styles—including baroque, Gothic, and Romanesque—line this area along the Huangpu River.
  • The Shanghai Museum: Designed to look like a bronze cooking vessel, this museum houses an extensive collection of ancient jade and bronze artifacts, Buddhist sculptures, and thousands of early Chinese coins. You can opt into this tour on Day 8 ($38/person; includes lunch).
  • Visit Suzhou: Often called “Paradise on Earth,” Suzhou is a city of canals just outside Shanghai. This optional tour includes a boat ride and visits to Suzhou’s famous gardens ($65/person).
  • Farewell dinner: On the evening of Day 9, join your traveling companions for a festive dinner at a local restaurant. You’ll catch your flight back to the United States the next morning.

Such an amazing trip! Everything ran smoothly and we had the best tour guide we could have hoped for. Our tour guide Nok went above and beyond for us and showed us a lot of bonus stuff that wasn’t in the itinerary. She also taught us a lot about the Thai culture and people that was very informative and life changing. I would recommend this trip to anyone

This tour was awesome, very organized and the hotel staff went above and beyond. My friend's mom (elderly woman) fell out first night there and didn't want to come to dinner with us. The staff arranged for someone to check on her hourly until our return. The entire trip was very accommodating. Would recommend!

I booked tour through Groupons in August for a 17 day tour with Smartours departing in February. November 4th Smartours sends emailing cancelling the trip with no reason. I call. They say I can change date to a week b4 or after original date. So I do and they want more money, $600. more. Smartours did not honor the agreement through Groupons. Rep calls asking why I cancelled.
