11-Day Tour of Peru’s Ancient Wonders and Natural Beauty

This 11-day adventure begins in Cusco, where you’ll get to see famous World Heritage Site Machu Picchu before heading to Lake Titicaca. You’ll end in the capital city of Lima before boarding your return flight home. This tour includes:

Days 1–3: Arrival and the Sacred Valley

After a long flight, you’ll land in Cusco, which sits 11,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains. From there, you’ll immediately set out for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. On your way, you’ll experience an authentic shaman ceremony before reaching your hotel in Yucay.

  • Awanakancha: At this local weaving center, you’ll see how the ancient techniques and traditions are kept alive.
  • Pick up souvenirs at Pisac, a colorful Indian market, on Day 3.
  • Learn weaving from an experienced weaver who will come right to the hotel to teach you.

Days 4–6: Machu Picchu and Cusco

Awake on Day 4 to board a train to the epic ruins of Machu Picchu. The train will pass through the Urubamba Valley, providing excellent sightseeing along the way. An expert guide will lead you on a tour of the site itself before you take the train back to Cusco. There, you’ll get 2 full days to explore the cobblestone streets and enjoy the local flavors.

  • Seven Wonders of the World: Machu Picchu earned a spot as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, due in part to its impressive architecture.
  • Temple of the Sun: Located in Machu Picchu, it’s the most important religious site of the Incas. Also known as Qorikancha, the temple is said to have once been covered in gold and filled with priceless statues.
  • Plaza de Armas: Shop for textiles, try gourmet coffee, and admire handsome neoclassical facades at this square in Cusco.

Days 7–8: Puno and Lake Titicaca

Leave Cusco on Day 7 for Puno, where the snow-capped peaks of the Andes dramatically line the horizon. Herds of alpacas and llamas can be seen grazing along the roadside on your way to the village of Andahuaylillas. Your hotel in Puno overlooks the glittering waters of Lake Titicaca.

  • Lake Titicaca: On the border between Peru and Bolivia, it’s South America’s highest navigable lake.
  • Origin story: The floating Uros islands were originally built for defense purposes; the largest holds a watchtower constructed almost entirely from tortora reeds.
  • Insider tip: Watch where you step when walking on the islands. The surface can be thin in spots, and you might accidentally step in lake water if you aren’t careful.

Days 9–11: Lima and Departure

A long day of traveling on Day 9 brings you back to Peru’s vibrant capital: Lima. Day 10 can be spent entirely at your leisure as you explore the shops, culture, and cuisine of the city. On Day 11, bid farewell to South America as you make your way back home.

  • Sightseeing highlights: The 17th-century San Francisco Monastery has a network of underground tunnels riddled thousands of human bones, which have been arranged to form elaborate patterns; the historic city center has many well-preserved examples of colonial architecture, too.
  • National cocktail: the pisco sour, made with lime juice, egg whites, angostura bitters, and grape brandy
  • Eat like a local: Sample ceviche at a sidewalk cafe, or sidle up to a bar in Miraflores or Barranco for a pisco sour.
