Former Mission School with Golf Course and Casino in Foothills of Canadian Rockies
For 10,000 years, the nomadic Ktunaxa tribe roamed the present-day Kootenay region in pursuit of migrant game and seasonal vegetation. Today, St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino pays tribute to this indigenous Canadian tribe with a cultural center highlighting the Ktunaxa’s renowned canoe-making and woodworking skills. The hotel was converted from a 19th-century mission school, and renovations not only maintained the historical integrity through period antique furniture but also added Ktunaxa-inspired accents.
At the 18-hole golf course, each hole is given an indigenous name. The first hole, Joseph Creek, was named after Chief Joseph. It now runs through the resort and past some of the fairways. Other holes wend through rolling woodlands and riverside plains, which remain smooth and flat despite being up in the Rocky Mountains.
Casino vouchers can be used for blackjack or slot play on any of the 239 slot machines at the onsite Casino of the Rockies. Three-card and texas hold'em tables are also scattered throughout the gaming floor, complemented by horserace and wheelbarrow-race simulcasts for off-track betting.
Four onsite restaurants offer a variety of cuisines. Grab a meal before or after a round of golf at the bar and grill in the clubhouse, which was renovated from the 19th-century mission's historical barn. At the upscale Purcell Grill, chefs use seasonal ingredients in crab and lobster cannelloni and other gourmet dishes. For a more casual ambiance, head to Fred's Saloon, which serves comfort fare such as soup and freshly baked pizzas.
Cranbrook, British Columbia: Scenic Vistas and Charming Mountain Villages
Tucked within a broad basin in British Columbia's East Kootenay region, Cranbrook is framed by the Rockies and the Purcell Mountains. This dramatic landscape takes center stage at Cranbrook's Elizabeth Lake Sanctuary, a 15-acre wildlife reserve known for its big-game herds, migratory waterfowl, and plastic-flamingo populations. Trails wend around the lake through wetlands and a forest, where visitors may glimpse western painted turtles, coyotes, elk, and moose.
The whimsical, Bavarian-style village of Kimberley lies fewer than 20 miles to the northwest. A pedestrian mall known as the Platzl is one of the town's main draws because of its many art galleries, shops, and German-themed cafés. While here, watch and listen for Kimberley's most famous resident, a large, freestanding cuckoo clock that chimes every hour.
