AAA Four Diamond Hotel with New England’s Largest Wine Collection

Only 74 restaurants receive Wine Spectator's coveted Grand Award each year, which makes Stonehedge Inn & Spa’s Left Bank Restaurant’s current 17-year run on the list especially impressive. With more than 60,000 bottles of wine in its collection—New England’s largest—the contemporary American restaurant can pair dishes with anything from a California charbono to an Italian pinot grigio to a Hungarian last-harvest wine. The must-visit restaurant has helped Stonehedge Inn & Spa earn AAA Four Diamond awards for 22 consecutive years, drawing visitors to the country estate situated on 36 woodland acres along northern Massachusetts’s Merrimack River.

Every night, well-dressed guests head to Left Bank Restaurant’s dining room to sample dishes such as pan-seared New England scallops with summer squash and zucchini spaghetti, sun-dried tomatoes, and lemon-thyme beurre blanc. Led by Executive Chef Florent Boutet, Left Bank’s culinary team designs a new menu every season to complement the restaurant's featured wines. If you're in the mood for more casual fare, grab a seat by the four-sided fireplace in the lounge and order tapas. In the morning, Left Bank’s continental breakfast includes fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice and country pastries.

The hotel's culinary theme extends beyond its award-winning restaurant. With European-marble bathrooms and heated towel racks, the guest rooms are furnished to feel like an elegant inn in the French countryside, perhaps bringing to mind France’s rolling vineyards. At the Spa at Stonehedge, services include vinotherapy treatments, such as a chardonnay salt glow that uses grape seeds from Burgundy, France, to moisturize skin.

Tyngsborough, Massachusetts: Small Riverside Town near Colonial Historical Attractions in Greater Boston

Located 28 miles north of Boston and 5 miles south of the New Hampshire border, Tyngsborough is near several popular outdoor recreation spots as well as some of the country's most important historical sites. About 20 miles from the hotel is the town of Concord, the setting for Minute Man National Historical Park. The park commemorates the opening battle of the American Revolutionary War along Battle Road Trail—a 5-mile stretch of restored colonial landscape that approximates the path traveled by the American minutemen militia. At the nearby Orchard House, the setting of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, you can tour the author's former home and inspect her family heirlooms.

More historical attractions and several charming neighborhoods await in nearby Boston, which is less than an hour away. In the Back Bay neighborhood, designer boutiques and sidewalk cafés tucked into residential brownstones line an eight-block stretch of Newbury Street. You could also hop on the nearby Freedom Trail, which wends through cobblestone streets, bringing Revolutionary history to life with stops at the Old South Meeting House, where plans for the Boston Tea Party were secretly hatched, and the site of the Boston Massacre. Before leaving town, be sure to try Boston’s fresh seafood—restaurants serve Wellfleet oysters, Atlantic lobsters, and Ipswich clams—with a pint of locally brewed Sam Adams beer.

When a staff person makes a mistake with a minimal charge you should let it go. We were charged the following day for the difference between the groupon allowance and the breakfast charge, after we were told that it was a mistake and the Stonehenge would absorb the difference.

A most lovely place! I dined at the restaurant both nights, which was a pleasure and has one of the largest wine lists anywhere. My only regret is that I didn't have just one more night.
