Tour Highlights
Your vacation highlights three fascinating sides of Costa Rican culture. You’ll begin your trip in the bustling capital of San José, where stately Spanish-influenced architecture, august cultural institutions, and charming shops and restaurants combine lend the city a hint of European charm. You’ll then head to La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano, which you’ll explore via zip line, rappelling rope, and horseback. You’ll end your trip with a few leisurely days in Puerto Carrillo, a coastal town known for its unspoiled beaches and thriving sport fishing scene.
- San José: The nation’s capital, San José, sits in the heart of the country in a lush upland basin surrounded by mountains. Its central location makes it a good base for exploring Costa Rica’s jungles and volcanoes, though there’s plenty to do in the city as well. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is a highlight, showcasing an impressive collection of artifacts that include a life-size statue of a cacique, or chieftain. You can also see a collection of old coins in the neighboring Numismatic Museum.
- Arenal Volcano: Up until 2010, the Arenal Volcano was still highly active, regularly spewing smoke and ash into the clear jungle skies. You won’t see much now that it’s finally dormant, but all that calm is worth it; now, hiking paths wind their way through lush rain forests chock full simmering hot springs, cascading waterfalls, and wildlife ranging from spider monkeys to boa constrictors.
- Guanacaste: Beginning on the border with Nicaragua, the Guanacaste province stretches out along Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast. The area is sparsely populated, with strong traditions in fishing and cattle ranching existing alongside the more recent tourism boom. In Puerto Carrillo, that takes the form of a bustling sport fishing scene, with boats from all over the region staying in hot pursuit of the village’s offshore population of marlins and swordfish.
